GENERATIVE VIDEO ART
By night I am a video jockey, VJ. It means I live mix visual material in clubs just about in the same way as a dj mixes music. The point is to create atmospheric video projections that match the music.
I became a vj, since after participating the vivid techno scene of Helsinki for years, I grew to wish I would find a meaningful and self-expressive way to contribute to the subculture. In vjing I found a playful and ambitious application for my long-lasting interest in coding, motion graphics and video editing. Nowadays I am even organising Aavistus, the first video jockey festival of Helsinki.
VJing combines careful preparation and fast-paced improvisation in an inspiring way: it offers a great challenges to experiment and expand one’s aesthetic imagination. I love planning and creating imposing loops with different softwares, recording movement textures and applying typography in order to create visual continuums with a subtle thematic narrative.
I use VDMX5 and TouchDesigner as my softwares. With them have learned to build my own user interfaces and especially experimented with audioreactive automation and lush feedback loops.
In November 2021 I worked on taking my vj practice to an even more generative and typograhic direction with a working grant from Grafia.
Compilation of my vj works from 2017–2019. It also includes few clips borrowed from Stanley Kubrik's Space Odyssey and Terence Malick's Tree of Life.
